Why Your Restaurant Appears on Google but Not in AI Answers

Key takeaways

  • A Google ranking does not guarantee selection in an AI-generated answer.
  • Publish accurate location and menu information people can verify.
  • Track Google AI exposure, observed citations and referral enquiries separately.

Start with what you can control

Different search products choose and present sources differently. Google says its established SEO practices remain relevant to its generative search features. It does not require special AI markup, Markdown files or llms.txt. No page format guarantees that a restaurant will be selected for a particular answer.

Check that your public pages can be crawled and indexed. Keep the important information in readable page content, including your menu, address, hours, cuisine, ordering options and contact details. For multiple locations, make it clear which menu and hours belong to which address.

Make your business information consistent

Compare the facts on your website with the profiles your customers use. Resolve conflicting business names, addresses, opening hours and ordering links. Separate delivery availability from dine-in hours where they differ.

Publish information your team can support. Explain dietary options carefully, show current menu items, and use original images of the food and location. If you publish a case study or statistic, identify what was measured and over which period. Repeated claims across your own pages are not independent corroboration.

Separate search discovery from model training

OpenAI distinguishes OAI-SearchBot, used for search discovery, from GPTBot, used for potential model training. Its publisher guidance also describes ChatGPT referral URLs with utm_source=chatgpt.com. Review crawler access according to your intended use rather than allowing or blocking every AI-related bot as one category.

A successful request from your browser does not prove that every crawler can access the site. If a page is missing, examine indexing tools and verified crawler requests alongside robots rules. Keep client proposals, account pages and private data outside public indexing.

Measure citations separately from business outcomes

Keep a small list of relevant buyer questions and record the date, product, question, location context and cited URLs when checking AI answers. Count linked citations separately from unlinked mentions. These checks are samples, not a complete count of every answer shown to every user.

Track referral visits and enquiry submissions as separate outcomes. A citation can appear without producing a visit, and a visit does not automatically become an order. For a restaurant website, distinguish an outbound ordering click from a completed purchase on another platform.

Before we start

A few useful answers.

Do I need llms.txt for Google AI visibility?

No. Google says it does not use special AI text files such as llms.txt for these search features. Focus on accessible pages, accurate facts and useful original content.

Can an agency guarantee AI citations?

No. The search product chooses its sources. An agency can improve content and technical access, then report the visibility and enquiries it can measure.
